Have you ever felt misunderstood, crazy and out of control? Perhaps even shunned as an outcast? Embrace it, go creative and eventually find your authentic tribe. You might find later on that being shunned was the best thing that ever happened to you.

Halloween in 2020 is all about losing control

Halloween this year is definitely unique. COVID-19 is the ultimate ghost of 2020 that began its ghoulish reckoning way before the Halloween season dawned on us.

All we can do is adapt, survive and hopefully rise from the ashes as the phoenix would. Let art and music help you cope and flourish in these circumstances. I like how some people are now calling it the “better normal” instead of new normal. It takes a little bit of brilliant-crazy these days to make it through. Might as well make the best of it.

To welcome this upcoming Halloween season, let’s explore a hauntingly good song by Halsey called Control. Listen to the song below and check out the lyrics.

Control by Halsey

Halsey creates deeply dark, perturbing lyrics that send chills down your spine. As with most artists, not all her hits are wins for me personally. But still, she has plenty of musical gems in her album troves, especially the older ones. This particular one is Control from her 2015 album Badlands.

By far, her Badlands album is the best from what I’ve heard. Her other albums just pale in comparison to it. She draws strength and inspiration from her being bipolar, which the song below somewhat depicts.

As the quote from Alice in Wonderland goes, “Have I gone mad (asks Alice)? I’m afraid so (says her father). You’re entirely Bonkers. But I will tell you a secret, all the best people are.” 😉

Hopefully this haunting, spine-chilling and oh-so-good song begins to satisfy your 2020 Halloween cravings. Also, explore more songs featured on the luscious windy romance playlist with the likes of Billie Eilish, Gracie Abrams, Lauve, etc.

Lyrics for Control by Halsey:

They send me away to find them a fortune
A chest filled with diamonds and gold
The house was awake, the shadows and monsters
The hallways, they echoed and groaned

I sat alone, in bed till the morning
I’m crying, “They’re coming for me”

And I tried to hold these secrets inside me
My mind’s like a deadly disease

I’m bigger than my body
I’m colder than this home
I’m meaner than my demons
I’m bigger than these bones

And all the kids cried out, “Please stop, you’re scaring me”
I can’t help this awful energy
God damn right, you should be scared of me
Who is in control?

I paced around for hours on empty
I jumped at the slightest of sounds
And I couldn’t stand the person inside me
I turned all the mirrors around

I’m bigger than my body
I’m colder than this home
I’m meaner than my demons
I’m bigger than these bones

And all the kids cried out, “Please stop, you’re scaring me”
I can’t help this awful energy
God damn right, you should be scared of me
Who is in control?

I’m well acquainted with villains that live in my head
They beg me to write them so they’ll never die when I’m dead
And I’ve grown familiar with villains that live in my head
They beg me to write them so I’ll never die when I’m dead

I’m bigger than my body
I’m colder than this home
I’m meaner than my demons
I’m bigger than these bones

And all the kids cried out, “Please stop, you’re scaring me”
I can’t help this awful energy
God damn right, you should be scared of me
Who is in control?

And all the kids cried out, “Please stop, you’re scaring me”
I can’t help this awful energy
God damn right, you should be scared of me
Who is in control?

Takeaway notes on the lyrics

When you walk, talk and enter the room… BOO! You arrive all clad in white with crimson stains, along with the slow clickety-clack of your heels and the rattling sound of loose metal chains… remnants of a victorious battle in the dark past. You proudly wear the chains as a warrior would his battle scars.

Luscious, scare those haters away. Let them whimper and cower in the corner of your presence. Only the few strong ones will remain loyally by your side, as you will also fight for them ’til the end.

The ghouls will shame you like they’d stone a witch or sorcerer in the medieval age just for being different or misunderstood. Let them, you will survive it anyway and rise above it. Just don’t let them control what you say or do in the end. Fight for your freedom and independence. Own your God-given power and slay your demons.

Happy Halloween!!!
